You are Limitless: How to Harness the Power of “Goaling”
I am grateful…
I live a life of abundance. I am fully aware of just how lucky I am. To be alive, to love and to experience the beauty of the world, what more can you ask for? While I have a genuine gratitude attitude for life, I am simultaneously an unapologetic dreamer who fantasizes about the next project I am going to take on, a new instrument to learn, a new destination to travel to. It’s my wish to stay fluid in every aspect of my being. I envision the evolution of me consisting of writing a book, starting another business, playing in a band and before all of that, definitely buying my own sailboat! My energy vibrates at a different frequency when I’m starry-eyed-gazing at the horizon for new directions to grow- for me, that’s living! While my zest for adventure is limitless, I am a human who has learned that accomplishing everything requires focus and a plan. I am a human who has also learned that I can achieve anything with the power of “goaling”.
Victoria Segal, my beloved acupuncturist, presented this concept to me as a suggestion when I expressed feeling overwhelmed by my ever-growing list of things I want to accomplish. I took her frame-work and made it my own. “Goaling” is the practice of identifying a goal, writing it down, and giving it numbers, figures and time frames. Identifying and mapping my aspirations has turned into a practice that I do one to three times a week. It has helped me to both prioritize and succeed. This practice has changed my life, now I am sharing the gift of goaling with you!
Get Goaling in 5 Easy Steps:
1. Write it down!
Seems so simple, yet it is often overlooked, underestimated. Writing down your goals is an essential, fundamental step in this process. According to Forbes.com, “A Harvard Business Study found that the 3% of graduates from their MBA who had their goals written down, ended up earning ten times as much as the other 97% put together, just ten years after graduation.” While goaling is not all about earning more money, spelling out your goals is a proven method for success!
Trying to figure out what goal you want to accomplish? Pro tip: set your stopwatch for three minutes and start brainstorming. A ticking clock can subconsciously eliminate extra time for your brain to start wandering and pondering all the ways your goals are unachievable. After you have created a list of goals you want to accomplish, choose one and break it down.
2. Quantify it!
Breathe life into that goal by giving it numbers, figures and dates. For example, my current goal statement is: “I want to buy a sailboat.” A goal statement quantified sounds like, “I want to purchase a sailboat for $5,000.00 in six months.” Getting specific with your goals is a great way to strengthen your statement and establish concrete expectations.
3. Positively reframe it!
Eliminate grammatical limitations in your goal statement. Words impact our thoughts and our thoughts impact our life. Using active language and positively reframing your goal statement, makes it believable and achievable.
A revised goal statement with numbers and mindfully reframed with positivity looks like this: “I will purchase a sailboat for $5,000 or less in six months or sooner .” Use your goal statement as an opportunity to create vision and manifest your desires.
4. Get specific!
So you have a solid goal-statement? Now, what needs to be done to accomplish it? This should lead you to more questions that, when researched and answered, will provide a map to accomplishing your goal. Write down every question that comes to mind and research the answer. In my case, I have been asking myself questions like:
. -What are the costs associated with docking and storing my sailboat in the off season?
-What should I look for when inspecting prospective sailboats for potential issues?
– How much money should I budget for repairs and maintenance annually?
The answers to these questions will help you to develop multiple mini goal statements that will inform and guide your strategy towards accomplishment.
5. Make it an affirmation.
Multiple studies have confirmed that affirmations are effective tools to increase confidence, problem solving, and improve productivity. Memorize your goal statement and keep it fresh in your mind. Envision yourself achieving your goal. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat. By using a goal statement as an affirmation, you can extinguish the negative, self-doubting, self-talk that prevented you from trying to achieve that goal in the first place. You can do anything you set out to do with a little focus, a little plan and a little goaling magic!
“So many of our dreams at first seem impossible. Then they seem improbable, and then, when we summon the will, they soon become inevitable.” – Christopher Reeve. Whether you are looking to create financial gains in your business or develop a healthy habit, your capabilities are limitless with the power of goaling. This process has been profoundly rewarding and it’s a gift to share this practice with you!
**P.S. By the time I finished writing this blog- I purchased my sailboat! No only did I purchase my sailboat but I did so for 10% less than my budgeted price!
