A Makeup Free Life- 5 Ways to Help You Love the Skin You’re In

     Like many women, I walk the fine line. Sometimes accepting myself as I am- it’s easy. And sometimes wanting to use products to make me feel prettier or accentuate certain aspects of my face- it’s tempting. In a world of fake eyelashes, hair extensions, and botox- our constructs of beauty are distorting the way we see ourselves and others. For most of my life, I believed the societal myth that being a female was making yourself look more attractive for others. And if you weren’t trying to look good, then you were a slob. To me wearing makeup was a part of that. If you weren’t wearing it, then you weren’t trying, and not trying was NOT okay.

     I wore makeup every day. Trying to make my skin look smooth, brighten my eyes and plump my lips. I did it for so long that after a while, I was actually AFRAID to be seen without it. Concealing blemishes and painting a “flawless” face made me resent my real skin more and more. That thought scared me, so I decided I would no longer be a slave to the conditioned expectations of our culture. It took courage and many conversations with myself- rewiring my thoughts to see my natural beauty instead of my imperfections. Slowly I gained the confidence and self acceptance to be seen without the mask. And now, each and every day I go out into the world, despite a breakout or tired eyes- makeup free!

     That’s right. NO MAKEUP. No tint. No brow brush. No lip gloss. It took some time to stop focusing on breakouts and skin discoloration. Learning to embrace my skin just the way it is, was the first step in the process. Now, I proudly bare my “naked” face with pride. I love that when people look at me, they see me. Not wearing makeup is freedom. I am free from society’s distorted beauty standards and I am free from my own assumptions of what it means to be feminine. Quitting cosmetics gifted me the freedom to be authentically me.

     Now let me be clear. Makeup can be an empowering tool. Although I don’t wear it daily, I do own it. I have been known to wear it for special occasions like weddings or fancy parties. Confidence is power, so I recognize the profound benefit that stems from improving your appearance- sometimes we need that little boost to get through the day! I understand that, I feel that. I am writing this because of that feeling. I want you to know you are beautiful with makeup and you are beautiful without it. So, if on your journey you discover the desire to let go of the pressure you feel from advertising campaigns that endlessly tell us we need to be better than we are, then here are 5 tips to help you become more comfortable in your own skin:

5. Eat Clean and Drink Often:                                                                                    “You are what you eat” – and our skin is evidence of that. Top skin care specialists include eating whole foods and staying hydrated as a priority in their clients’ skin care routine. Drinking at least 64 ounces of water a day, as well as incorporating foods such as fresh fruits, and vegetables, whole grains, and healthy fats will naturally boost your skin’s radiance, allowing you to be confidently makeup free!

4. Go to Sleep:
Not getting enough sleep can cause physical, mental, and emotional fatigue- but did you know a lack of sleep can also increase the signs of aging and decrease your overall satisfaction with your skin? Be sure to get at least eight hours of sleep every night.

-Sleep troubles? Try creating a nightly routine that involves calming tea, a hot bath, and shutting down all electronics at least 30 minutes before bed.

3. Be Smart and Styled in the Sun:
It’s a fact: prolonged, direct sun exposure can cause skin to appear more aged as well as put you at risk for skin cancer. This doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy your next beach vacation- just protect your skin. Wear sunscreen, SPF sun shirts and stay in the shade whenever possible.

-All sunscreens are not created equally! Many brands of sunscreen contain chemicals that are harmful to your body and the earth. Shop mineral based and reef safe- Badger Brand Zinc Oxide sunscreen is my favorite option!

2. Seek Safer Skincare:
Taking care of your skin starts with safe products made with natural ingredients. Just as most cosmetics are toxic to the body and damaging to the skin, many cleansers, moisturizers and toners contain hormone disrupting chemicals disguised in fragrances and pretty plastic packaging. Check the labels on your products and compare them to this list of harmful chemicals frequently found in personal care products. Below are some safer options that I use to cleanse and moisturize my face each night:

1. Love yourself as you ARE!
YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL JUST THE WAY YOU ARE! Do I need to say it again? YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL JUST THE WAY YOU ARE! Remember, “flaws” are merely perceptions. Those birthmarks you hate, someone else loves them. That pale skin that never tans, there is someone out there who admires your complexion. Those crows feet you wish away, there is a young girl idolizing your wisdom and grace. Start looking at yourself through a lense of love and you will see the beauty that is simply, naturally, truly you!
